Steve, I am not sure if you Savage is different than my 1987 Savage, but this is the way I hooked up my Iron Eagle tach, not much different than a car:

· Green wire to NEGATIVE terminal of coil (this is the sense lead)
· Red wire to POSITIVE ON terminal of coil (or other switched 12 volt source, power supply)
· Light Blue (or Blue) wire to POSITIVE ON terminal of coil (or other switched 12 volt source, for bulb illumination)
· Black wire to CHASSIS (Ground)

Once you get your tach successfully working, you'll wonder how you did without it.
